When we first went drove down the main entrance of the Peachtree Dekalb Airport, I was a bit skeptical that a park existed in the industrial park. However, in the shadow of the control tower there is a hidden park that comes right up to an active airport taxi and runway.
The park's play area is lined with recycled rubber tires. There is: a swingset (2 for big kids, 2 for smaller ones), 2 rocking airplanes, a twisting arched monkey bars, a set parallel bar and a main 2 story playground feature. On the ground level, underneath the platform there are maps of the United States and pretend elements of an airplane cockpit. To get to the tops, there is a rope climb, a cool toddler friendly ramp with rounded tire ladder rung and a metal monkey bar style ladder. To get down there's a wavy slide. One of the unique features is a yellow intercom system: there is a yellow pipe with a bullhorn shape cone to speak/listen into the extrude from the ground. The other end comes out about 20 feet away on the second level of the main playground feature.
The coolest part of the park is that it is designed to view take-off and landing of the aircraft which range from small one propeller Cessna's to executive style jet planes. PDK airport is surprisingly busy with aircraft coming and going at a regular interval. There is a small bleacher style seating area at at the corner of the park for optimal viewing which always seems to have some people who must be interested in airplanes as they are without kids.
There are picnic tables covered by a hanger style pavilion in which bathrooms are located - unfortunately, this is the only covered area at the main playground. There is a small grassy area between the park and the main PDK building perfect for small kids to run around. A second set of picnic tables are located here as well, under some tree cover. A nice perk of the park is Down Wind Restaurant perfect for families.
It's best to come early in the morning or late in the day as the playground has little shade. We prefer coming on the weekends to avoid traffic and there are more kids running around at this time.
